Advancing "WE" in Policing
Our Direction
Where "WE" are going...
Advancing “WE” in Policing – Ontario, (formerly known as Advancing Women in Policing) is a group of executive men and women in policing in the province that was formed in November of 2017. Inspector Tammy Fryer of the Windsor Police Service through the Executive Development in Policing Course hosted by Calgary Police Service identified initiatives from other provinces that focused on advancing women in policing, particularly in leadership roles.
The group was originally made up of women from Windsor, Ottawa, OPP, RCMP, Niagara and Peel Region and has since grown, adapted and developed from a gender focus into advancing an inclusive approach for authentic equity, inclusion and diversity as it relates to everyone within policing in Ontario - What "WE" are today. We are continually seeking to raise visibility of issues, create networking opportunities, recognize the value of what everyone brings to policing, and explore ways to bring more people into the conversation.
We held our first workshop in February of 2019 -- AWIPON 2019 in Ottawa. Our first session participants were police women identified as future leaders as well as those to benefit from networking opportunities. Our first workshop was an overwhelming success. Connections made, friendships forged, opinions and perspectives shared, information gathered. Statistical data was gathered for each service in attendance as well as common themes and positive initiatives identified. The information and insight gleaned from our first session compelled us to immediately adapt in name and focus. Advancing women in policing for equity and inclusion is in itself exclusionary! So here we are - Advancing "WE" , (everyone) in achieving equitable and inclusive police workplaces.
On February 19, 20 & 21 2020 "WE" held our second workshop in Niagara Falls. In doing so our ultimate goal is to act as a catalyst enabling police (women and men) from across Ontario to have a collective voice regarding issues that directly impact us in the area of equity and inclusion. "WE" collected opinions, experiences, issues, challenges and in the process of completing a document to presented to the OACP Executive Committee to provide a direct unfiltered picture of inclusivity in Policing accompanied by initiatives to bring about change. This document is being created by Carleton University under the guidance of Dr Linda Duxbury.
So..... COVID. Yes it has slowed us down momentarily. We are waiting for our Carleton University research document with great anticipation and are sparking up our "WE" police working group post C-19 to get back to business! We are looking forward to re-defining our direction based on collective input from you in leading change.
