S/Sgt. Jennifer Neamtz - Wellington County OPP
Prior to entering the world of policing Jennifer held many diverse employment positions such as Dental Assistant, Support worker for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities, By-law enforcement officer, instructor at Niagara College of Applied Arts & Technology and mother of two amazing children.
Jennifer joined policing at a later age and has not looked back.
Jennifer sustained a debilitating injury to her right wrist and was placed on desk duty requiring three (3) surgeries and unable to qualify for her use of force. She did not let that stop her, and utilized all the assistance the OPP offered through In Service Training and taught herself to become a proficient left handed shooter thus allowing her to return to frontline duties! She used this experience and saw how remarkable the human spirit and power from within truly is, how setbacks and fear of the unknown can play with a persons mental health. Living this and learning from it guided her towards becoming the Mental Health Officer for the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP.
While in this role, she volunteered for a two (2) deployment to the remote First Nation of Pikangikum located in the District of Kenora. This community boasted the highest number of people under the age of twenty-five (25) per capita but also the highest number of youth suicides. Knowing this, she created the first Community Response Unit focusing on both reactive and proactive policing with a focus on building positive relationships and connecting people struggling with mental health issues to resources in the area. Within one (1) year since the inception of the program a marked decrease in youth suicides was realized.
In 2020, Jennifer was honoured to be the recipient of the Excellence in Performance Award from the Ontario Women in Law Enforcement for my work with mental health in Pikangikum. She continues to monitor the progress of the program.
In 2021, Jennifer was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and is the Operations Manager in Wellington County.
